Commentary
Ed. pr. was proposed by Boeckh. On basis of the Doric dialect of the inscription, he suggested its origin in Chersonesos. It is more likely that we should restore an epithet at the end of line 2, ματρόπολις or μάτηρ τῶν πόλεων, pointing to Herakleia Pontica (cf. the mention of metropoly in the Chersonesian decrees honouring citiznes of Herakleia: ipе357 и особенно ipe362, where Herakleia is also called πράτα [τοῦ Πόντου]). What remains unclear is whether such titulature, applied to Herakleia, had an official status, which could point to a grant of metropoly status given to some poleis by Rome during the imperial period; alternatively, we may be dealing with a designation adopted in documents only in Herakleia and used as a sort of propaganda (Robert 1937, 245ff.; сf. Heller 2006, 298ff.).
