Michael (?) and Basil... Lord, remember (?)... the fraternity... for the servant. In the year 66...

Commentary

All information about the inscription comes from the manuscript of P. Koeppen (Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg Branch f. 30, op. 1, d. 343, ch. 1, l. 96; kindly pointed out to me by I.V. Tunkina). According to Koeppen, the inscription was found on the estate of colonel Potyomkin. At the top of the inscribed field four letters chi look ornamental. The inscription is restored rather tentatively.

1-4. Judging by the palaeography and the date, the inscription should be compared with V 173 (Mangup, 1179 C.E.). Between the abbreviated word "year" and the chi, there should be a sigma. The restoration "fraternity" allows us to speculate that the inscription might have originated at some monastery in the area of Artek (cf. V 240 from nearby Panair). At the same time, we cannot rule out the possibility that the inscription is post-Byzantine.
