Translation
For the remembrance and rest of the servant of God, Hedonios. He died on the 10th of September, in..., in... indiction.
Commentary
The monument was discovered by Dubois de Montpéreux in one of Taman churches. It was first mentioned in print by Ashik (1843, 76, № 8). Due to the loss of the monument, it is impossible to say anything definitive about its shape or palaeography. On the one hand, the earliest example of the formula ἐτελειώθη in Crimea (see Introduction IV.3.F.а) is V 316 (767 C.E.); on the other hand, it is also attested in an inscription of the 2nd half of the VIth century from Constantinople (Schneider 1936, 397, № 2). Alpha with broken crossbar and the date according to indiction, without the year (as was rightly noted by Latyshev) support an Early Byzantine date. A day of the week preceded the indiction.
1–3. On the formula, see Introduction IV.3.F.a.
5. The name Hedonios (here Hidonios) occurs in Bosporus once before (CIRB 276); in Christian epigraphy, it is unknown.
