Commentary

Large painted red circle. There is room for debate whether such a mark has a place in an epigraphic corpus, but we are in borderline territory with many unclassified marks, such as the cross-shaped type, or single vertical line. A large red dot as the one on this amphora may function in the same way as other unalphabetic marks. It seems to be the same red paint as the line, probably decorative, painted under the rim, which suggests that the mark was added at the time of amphora production.
